Here we are, at the end of our first book! What did you think?
I have to say, I’m not entirely certain I am happy with the way the book ended. Yeah… It’s great that Katie got her happy ending. It’s fantastic that Francie got to go to college. It was amusing how things turned out for Sissy, and I am so glad her husband was such a great guy.
Although Francie realized her mother’s favoritism toward Neeley previously, it seemed to sting her the most when she was told she wasn’t going to be able to go to high school. I feel like Francie took great pride in knowing she was providing for her family, and I loved how she put her foot down and resolved to get into college.
I was disappointed in the whirlwind romance between Francie and Lee, and was happy to see her reunited with Ben in the end. I feel like there were many things left dangling at the end. We don’t know what became of Neeley – did he ever become the doctor his mother dreamed he would be? Did Francie end up marrying Ben, or did she find her own way in Michigan?
So many things happened over the course of this book, but I never really felt like anything was happening. Does that even make sense?
What are your final impressions of the book? Did you love it?
